Three Forks Play Map
Three Forks Horizontal Production
Summary
The graphic above presents all Three Forks horizontal wells completed in the Williston Basin since 2008.
The Three Forks is an unconventional, tight oil play and can be delineated into upper, middle, and lower zones. The North Dakota Industrial Commission (NDIC) establishes the Bakken Petroleum System to encompass the first 50’ below the Bakken, which includes the upper and middle Three Forks zones. This producing zone is overpressured due to source rock maturity, ranging from ~0.55 – 0.80 psi/ft.
Development of the Three Forks has been heavily concentrated in North Dakota. To date, the Bakken has been approximately three times as active as the Three Forks (on the basis of horizontal well count and cumulative oil production).
