Marcellus Play Map
Marcellus Horizontal Production
Summary
The graphic above presents all Marcellus Shale horizontal wells completed in the Appalachian Basin since 2008.
The Marcellus Shale is the most productive shale gas reservoir in North America, and Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) data indicates that more than 34% of current U.S. dry shale gas production is sourced from this play as of 2021. Strong porosity, high organic content, and significant geopressure help to make this interval a world-class reservoir.
Historically, development has been concentrated in the southwest and northeast areas of Pennsylvania, and also in West Virginia. Development of the Marcellus Shale in New York has been limited due to governmental restrictions.
Methodology Overview
VSO sourced landing bench and production data from IHS to prepare these maps.
